OMG I have just discovered a major problem with Chris Jones and Judy Goldberg THE IMPACT in the Create 50 initiative to help new writers and filmmakers.
The problem, and it is a big one, is that the quality of scripts is so high it is going to be a right pig of a job selecting just 50. It looks like it be the hardest judging I have undertaken in my 46 years in this industry.
It really is a pity the BFI will all its lottery money cannot see the potential of this film and scheme. No one anywhere in the world has come up with such a concept to help so many and so effectively. It really is a crying shame that no funder sees the potential.
Luckily some of the biggest names in the film industry see the importance of helping new talent. Joe Eszterhas, Gub Neal, Ted Tally, William Nicholson, Iain Smith, Lisa Albert etc have all come onboard in one way or another.
Out of this excise will come the leading screenwriters and filmmakers of tomorrow but with so many in the establishment only giving money to the same old same old it really does make it so fecking difficult for Chris, Judy and their team working for either very little or even no money, to say nothing of all the filmmakers working for free, making it 10 times harder than it should be.
